Saved A Fly’s Life
The Boat Situation
Legolas and Gimli were great friends in the LOTR trilogy, but their friendship was not without its issues. In fact, a lot of the time, they looked on the verge of punching each other in the face.
Image via Imgur
In this interview, it suddenly becomes clear that their love-hate relationship on screen is fueled by their dramatics and poking fun at each other off-screen. It’s quite funny to see how easily John Rhys-Davies can push Orlando Bloom’s buttons, but we know it’s all love.
Best Buds
After filming just about every scene together, Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd became the best of friends. Just like their characters, they were jokesters and loved to mess around with each other.
Image via Imgur
It’s obvious that the bond they formed is special, and their lives have changed because they met. Still, that doesn’t mean that they can’t call each other names. Are you really best friends if you don’t insult each other every so often?
What’s That Ruckus?
The Lord of the Rings trilogy had a cast composed mostly of men. However, Sir Ian McKellen might argue that he was part of a cast made up of mostly boys.
Image via Imgur
We can’t imagine how McKellen—an actual knight—was able to deal with filming three whole movies surrounded by these younger, more energetic, and definitely uncultured in their music-taste boys who loved to mess around. We’re sure watching them interact on set was a hoot to see.
Getting to Know Each Other
Food has the magical ability to bring people together. So, when the LOTR cast sat down for a meal at the beginning of their time filming in New Zealand, John Rhys-Davies knew what he had to do to help the cast get to know each other.
Image via Imgur
There’s nothing that bonds people together more than all suffering from an intense food coma at the end of a hefty meal. We wonder how much they were actually able to finish.
Knocking Boats
By now, we’ve come to realize that Orlando Bloom was an easy target for the rest of the cast to mess with. Even Sean Bean had to bother him a bit whenever the opportunity presented itself.
Image via Imgur
And the scenes in the canoes were the perfect opportunity. Bloom took his canoeing seriously and practiced extra to make sure he was able to gracefully control his boat—which made it all the more enticing for Bean to knock his boat and throw him off right before a scene.
Tea and Biscuits
Sir Ian McKellen’s long white beard and hair and his calm but powerful stare made him a force to be reckoned with as Gandalf. But it’s Sir McKellen himself that makes this character such a commanding presence.
Image via Imgur
For the other actors though, the only thing better than working alongside a renowned knighted actor is being able to joke around and steal the tea and biscuits of a renowned knighted actor. And Billy Boyd was not going to miss out on this opportunity.
The Secret to Aging Well
The Lord of the Rings was filmed over 20 years ago, so it shouldn’t necessarily come as a surprise that Billy Boyd is in his fifties. Maybe it’s his goofy personality or the fact that we can’t look at him without imagining him as a hobbit, but we still can’t help and be shocked when we hear his age.

Boyd is a great reminder that age is just a number. As long as you keep your good humor—and shave your chest—you can remain young in your heart.
Like Character Like Actor
Viggo Mortensen is quite a natural-born leader. The other cast members often commented on his ability to joke around and be affectionate, while also taking his acting very seriously. When he gets in the zone, everyone around him notices how intensely connected to the character he becomes.

And once Mortensen himself realized how complex his character Aragorn was he used these qualities to inspire and drive his own performance. How inspiring is that?
Falling in Love
While filming his wedding scene, Sean Astin was having a particularly difficult time getting into the festivities. Being the good friends that they are, Billy Boyd and Viggo Mortensen decided to help him out by providing him with a little bit of inspiration.
Image via Imgur
Without any warning, Mortensen grabbed Boyd and planted a big smooch right on the lips—and it wasn’t a quick peck either. It was enough to have Boyd feeling all kinds of emotions, and everyone watching too.
On Vacation
Filming nonstop for over a year can be exhausting. So, when the cast members got some time off to go and travel or see their families, some of the Fellowship members decided to take a trip around Australia and Thailand.
Image via Imgur
Billy Boyd says that vacationing with the others was not much different from what we’d expect from a regular vacation, but we would have loved to be a fly on the wall while they traveled around.
Stabbed in the Back
Even though Saruman’s death was a long time coming, we were still surprised when Wormtongue stabbed him in the back. Interestingly enough, it was not Peter Jackson’s direction for Saruaman to die gasping for air, but Christopher Lee’s idea himself.
Image via Imgur
Lee had once been a part of the British secret services and he seemed to know a lot more about the sound people make when they are stabbed in the back than Jackson did. Christopher Lee just got a whole lot more interesting.
Beautiful Bloom
We can admit that besides Liv Tyler, Orlando Bloom was the most beautiful actor to grace LOTR with his presence. He already has quite a gorgeous face, but once he had that wig on, we all fell in love with Legolas the elf.
Image via Imgur
And Dominic and Billy were no exceptions. Not only could they appreciate his beauty, but they also appreciated his hygiene. We’re glad they were such close friends or this might’ve come off as a bit creepy.
Mr. Involved
While three of the hobbits were troublemakers both on and off screen, Sean Astin acted a little bit differently. He went into filming with a wife and a child, and his fatherly instincts kicked in long ago.
Image via Imgur
Thus, whenever there was a possibly dangerous situation, he was at the front ready to protect and reassure everyone else that everything was safe. Hey, at least someone was looking out for these guys because they clearly weren’t looking out for themselves.
Horse Pals
By themselves, every actor in LOTR stood tall and proud as part of the Fellowship. However, there are a few others that don’t often get the recognition they deserve—we’re talking about the horses.
Image via Imgur
Without these stallions, how else would these characters travel around, entering a scene proudly or running away as fast as they can in other scenes? We love that these actors got to really know their horses’ personalities.
The Multifaceted Mortensen
In order to give his best performance, Viggo Mortensen has to deeply connect to his character. He must become the role he plays, and his fellow actors comment on just how seriously he takes his job.
Image via Imgur
And his talents go beyond acting—he paints, takes photographs, and engages in a number of other creative outlets. He can do all of this while still being a goofy, playful, head-butting guy. Mortensen is a lot more interesting than one might think.
Impressive Physique
After working hard on your body, it’s nice to be appreciated for it. While we’re sure Lee Pace gets plenty of appreciation from fans and friends, is there really such a thing as too many compliments?
Image via Imgur
And when it’s coming from Orlando Bloom, this praise probably sounded extra sweet to Pace. Get yourself friends like these who always hype each other up and give endless compliments.
Harsh Critic
You’re likely to come into contact with people who are not the biggest fans of the movies you have starred in. It’s part of the job. But when Jack Nicholson tells you your movie was too long with too many endings, how are you supposed to reply?

While we never wanted these movies to end, Jack Nicholson clearly felt differently. Hey, you can’t please everyone.
Hobbiton Exists
After working hard as Frodo Baggins in six movies, Elijah Wood is more than entitled to keeping some of the coolest memorabilia from the film. To Wood, Hobbiton will always have a special place in his heart.
Screenshot from “The Graham Norton Show”
And did you know—it’s a real place? Despite Graham Norton’s denial, they actually built Hobbiton for the first three movies and then rebuilt it with sustainable materials for The Hobbit trilogy. And now you too can visit Hobbiton!
Let It Rip
The hobbits first meet each other when Merry and Pippin are running through the fields and bump into Frodo and Samwise. Not only is their meeting iconic, but the way they all roll down the hill and fall on top of each other is a scene we’ll never forget.

And the cast and crew probably won’t forget this scene either, especially since in one of the takes, Elijah Wood’s body betrayed him and let out an unexpected noise.
Getting Crushed
Because these movies were packed full of adventures and all sorts of creatures, the actors were put through quite a few trials and tribulations in order to film the most iconic scenes.
Image via Imgur
When Dominic and Billy were filming their scene where they are carried around by Treebeard, they had to pop a squat on a bicycle seat to situate themselves in the tree. Bicycle seats are uncomfortable enough—we can’t imagine filming for hours on one of them.
Mother Knows Best
Being a child actor must be quite overwhelming. Your life completely changes, and your routine is so different from every other kid your age. Rupert had some difficulty when he started acting in the series. Luckily, he was surrounded by his on-screen family who quickly felt like an actual family.
Image via Imgur
In the same way that Molly Weasley kept the family together, so did Julie Walters. She bounced off of Mark Williams and provided a safe and comfortable space for the young actors as well.
Big Head
The sibling dynamic between Fred and George Weasley was so well perceived on screen, that people couldn’t get enough of their relationships in real life. Even in interviews, being twins was the most intriguing thing about the Phelp brothers.
Image via Imgur
We feel a bit bad that these boys never could escape the constant questions about their looks, but they are great sports about it. The joking manner and banter they have with each other are always so entertaining to watch.
At Least He’s Ginger
The original idea for Ron Weasley described him as tall and thin, a clumsy, gangly boy. The boys cast as the Weasley brothers seem to fit that description much more than Rupert Grint, but we couldn’t imagine Ron being played by anyone else.

One of our favorite parts of the Harry Potter series was being able to watch the boys grow up and grow into their cute baby faces. By the end of the eighth movie, they became so associated with their characters, it didn’t matter what the original description was.
Father Figure
Arthur Weasley had a whole gang of ginger-haired rascals running around his house. And Ginny was not only the sole girl in a family of all boys, but she was also the youngest, putting her in a very special position.

It turns out that Bonnie Wright got to experience something similar while filming the Harry Potter series. As Arthur Williams explains, he would always keep an eye out for her, feeling a fatherly instinct take over, which probably made it very comfortable for her to act in such a unique setting.
Bill Got to Miss Out
The eldest Weasley brother, Bill, was absent from most of the Harry Potter movies, which makes sense since he was also absent for most of Ron’s adolescent and teenage years.
Image via Imgur
As Domhnall Gleeson explains, Bill was happy to innocently show up with a fiancee in the seventh movie. Eventually, they would assist Harry, Hermoine, and Ron in a time of trouble, which we guess makes up for avoiding any other issues the family experienced in the previous movies. We find it hilarious how unbothered both Gleeson and his character seem about this.
The Great Debate
One of the most British things ever, in our opinion, is the debate about marmite. Even the slogan for marmite is “love it or hate it,” and it seems that for every one person who enjoys it, there’s a person who is so disgusted even by the thought of it.
Image via Imgur
James and Oliver demonstrate this perfectly. We’re not sure who would spread this on a sweet pancake, but we might have to agree that even the idea of it is disgusting. The Phelp brothers are really proving that twins are individuals!
Pocket Toad
One aspect that really enhanced the world of magic was the affinity for characters to have deep connections to their very odd pets. We’re not sure we would’ve loved to hold a rat or a ferret, and we definitely would’ve squirmed if we had to hold a toad in our hands.
Image via Imgur
Apparently, in a deleted scene, Chris Rankin pulled Neville’s toad out of his pocket. To prepare for the scene, he had to keep the toad in his pocket for the entire length of filming this scene!
Following Her Own Rules
Julie Walters’ role as Molly Weasley was one of the best casting decisions for Harry Potter. Not only is she motherly and caring, but her sass and spunk shine through, making her the perfect mother figure to keep the Weasley family in check.
Screenshot from “The Graham Norton Show”
And in real life, Walters is that sassy, hilarious lady. In an interview on the talk show with Graham Norton, she follows her own rules, avoiding the questions and acting exasperated for even being asked anything. This is one hysterical woman.
Mrs. Weasley Turns 64
Julie Walters is an iconic lady. And with every interview we see her in, we’re reminded more and more why she is perfect for the role of Molly Weasley. The way she commands attention in an endearing way is one of the very special things about Molly Weasley. She’s protective and strict and funny, and she cares about her children, and Harry, with all her heart.
Screenshot from the “The Graham Norton Show”
It’s her humor that shines through in her real life most, as we can see from this interview. Come on, she deserves compliments and much more!
Two Halves Make a Whole
Being a twin means constantly being associated with one another. People get you confused all the time, and even when there is only one of you there, they wonder where the other one has gone.
Image via Imgur
For the Phelp brothers, this is not necessarily an issue. In fact, they enjoy being with each other. And as Oliver says here, he himself considers them two pieces of a whole. Without his brother standing next to him, he looks a bit lonely, doesn’t he?
How Do You Feel?
While the pair of brothers did just about everything together, there were some aspects of the Weasley twins that did make them clearly individuals. We’re not sure what exactly this interview is referring to.
Image via Imgur
Could he be talking about the fact that Fred Weasley was born first, therefore making him just a little bit older? Whatever it is he is referring to, it’s no matter because unfortunately, Fred was also the first to die, while George just has his ear cut off. We’d rather take the second option.
Dynamic Duo
Just like Harry Potter probably had a hard time with constant attention and fame, Ron Weasley had to deal with being the friend of the guy with the fame—the one who didn’t get blamed for as many things but also didn’t always receive credit when it was due.
Image via Imgur
Ron Weasley was mostly a good sport about this. Rupert Grint was as well, making the joke that they were like a famous duo, but instead of Batman and his sidekick, Robin, they were more like a genius and a super cool, dangerous outlaw.
In Sync
Identical twins share almost 100% of the same DNA. This is what causes them to look so similar, and therefore get confused. However, they have different personalities that allow people who know the pair to be told apart.
Image via Imgur
But when the Phelp twins not only look the same but act the same, that’s when things get confusing. Here, we can see them move so in sync that even if we could tell from this far away which is which, their movements make them seem as if they share something deeper than just looks.
